Meeting in the Middle: Methodological Discussions in Sinology and Chinese Philosophy

The workshop “Meeting in the Middle: Methodological Discussions in Sinology and Chinese Philosophy” tackles methodological differences between sinology and philosophy. Recent developments in Chinese studies have witnessed a material turn, as a critique of the elitist discourse of philosophy, which rediscovers previously marginalized resources in the study of Chinese thought and culture, such as social history, archeological findings, visual art, popular texts, and ritual practices. Taking the sinological concerns into consideration, scholars in Chinese philosophy intend to further the discussion on discursive openness and multivocal textuality. Such an exchange between sinologists and philosophers thus entails not just a re-reading of canon as a re-contextualization of ancient texts. More importantly, it is call for diversifying the philosophical canon by including resources that were traditionally considered meaningless or unimportant. Inviting scholars in intellectual history, art history, philology, and philosophy, the workshop explores how interdisciplinary conversations can expand the shared horizon and advance mutual understanding.
