Abstract

Grammatical marking of Associated motion (AM), a relatively newly established grammatical category which is becoming an important topic of linguistic typology, was previously known mainly from languages of Australia and South America, but has now been identified in languages from many parts of the world (see Guillaume & Koch (eds.) 2021, Associated Motion, De Gruyter Mouton). This talk attempts to account for some specific morphosyntactic patterns found in Chinese languages (Sinitic) and in Japanese in terms of AM. Based on recent studies, we further discuss some salient features of AM grammatical marking in East Asian languages.
