Underpinning much of Open Science's thinking is the notion of democratisation, of equity. Yet, when observed more closely, it is by no means certain that Open Science will in fact lead to more equity, both within academia and beyond. In this talk I will show how current implementations of Open Access publishing might be exacerbating existing inequities within academia, and to which extent research on global societal challenges is indeed conducted globally.

Recognising the need for diversity in science should also extend to contemporary efforts of reforming research in pursuit of increased reproducibility. I will discuss how the TIER2 project will increase reproducibility and lead to better understanding of related issues across diverse epistemologies.
