N400 as an index of semantic feature preactivation

Abstract
During language comprehension, humans actively generate predictions about upcoming information. The N400 component of ERPs has been an important tool in studying predictive processing. However, the content of predictive pre-activations as indexed by the N400 component remains an open question. In this talk, I will present our recent work suggesting that the N400 amplitude attenuations arise from pre-activations of abstract semantic features, rather than specific lexical items.
