Abstract

Classically, the speech signal was considered to contain segments and supra-segmental information, which in turn mapped onto lexical and prosodic information. Recent research has, however, shown that, in production, prosody not only influences the “rhythmic” properties such as f0, duration, and amplitude but also segmental properties. This gives rise to two questions. First, does the segmental analysis, that is, trying to decode which words were uttered, take prosodic properties into account. Second, can prosodically conditioned segmental detail be used by listeners as a cue to the prosodic structure. I will present data that the answer to both questions is yes. This gives rise to the question how to conceptualize the interplay of prosodic and segmental analysis, which traditionally have been considered as encapsulated processes.
