About us

Since 1999, Leiden University’s Centre for Professional Learning (CPL) has provided academically grounded learning and development programmes for professionals and organisations in the public sector. Based in The Hague, CPL brings together leading academic expertise and practical experience, helping professionals address complex societal challenges and translate new insights directly into their work.

We believe that societal challenges can only be addressed effectively by professionals who are open to new perspectives, prepared to think critically, and equipped with evidence-based knowledge.

Our programmes are designed to enhance the impact of professionals. They combine the latest academic insights with practical experience and are developed and delivered in collaboration with researchers from Leiden University, other universities, and experienced practitioners.

At CPL, connection is at the heart of everything we do: connection between academia and practice, between different disciplines and perspectives, and among participants themselves. Together, we build strong professional networks and strengthen the public sector in areas such as politics and governance, security, public leadership, and diversity and inclusion.

Our approach

Our programmes combine scientific depth with practical applicability. Programme Leads and guest speakers are curious, open-minded, and committed to fostering interaction. They bring together diverse perspectives through case studies, simulations, and real-world examples. Through their learner-centred approach, participants are not only inspired but also equipped to make a meaningful impact in their work.

We develop our programmes in close collaboration with professional practice. Through ongoing engagement with participants, their organisations, and our extensive network of professionals, we maintain a strong understanding of current learning needs.
