My work focuses on the irruption of the Mongols onto the larger world scene, focusing on their invasion of the Persianate world and the creation of the Ilkhanid state in Iran in the 13th and 14th centuries. Broadening the mindsets of students who may not have dealt with this area or time period helps to further a better understanding of regional and global trends. This focus conteracts the often narrow viewpoints held in the media which continue to shape how people view the outside world.

Research

The topic of my project is ‘Loyalty, Punishment and Violence in the Turco-Mongol World’. Through this topic I consider the Mongol invasions and their impact on the cultures around them. Their rapid expansion into lands far from their heartland caused fascinating cultural repercussions.

This concept focuses on who the rulers and the ruled were in a Mongol context, dealing with identity issues caused by these invasions, especially with relation to punishment. For example, how was disloyalty punished with regards to say a Persian vizier or a Mongol noyan (commander). How did descent from Chinggis Khan and Chinggisid legitimizing ideas affect the Mongols’ conception of both loyalty and their treatment of the disloyal?

In this regard I am analyzing loyalty conceptually, considering what it meant to be loyal/disloyal and what actions or lack of action was considered by Mongol rulers to be punishable. W ithin th is framework, I am looking at Mongol violence and its uses, considering how violent punishments were applied or not applied. I am dealing with both the rise of the Mongol Empire and its successor state, the Ilkhanate in Iran.
