Susan van den Hof is a professor of Epidemiology and Surveillance of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, she is the head of the Center for Epidemiology and Surveillance within the Center for Infectious Disease Control at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

Strengthening epidemiological research on infectious diseases

Susan van den Hof has been a professor of Epidemiology and Surveillance of Infectious Diseases since September 2025. This chair contributes to strengthening epidemiological research on infectious diseases, a field that has been in the spotlight more than ever since the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the chair is to further enhance scientific research on infectious diseases and their control. In the coming years, the focus will be on improving infectious disease surveillance, monitoring vaccination coverage and effectiveness, and studying post-infectious conditions such as post-COVID.

Academic career

Susan van den Hof studied Biomedical Sciences in Nijmegen. She earned her PhD at Utrecht University with research on the protection of the Dutch population against mumps, measles, and rubella, as well as studies conducted during the measles epidemic of 1999-2000. From 1996 to 2006, she held various positions at the RIVM. Between 2007 and 2018, she worked at the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation as an epidemiologist and research coordinator, conducting research primarily in Asian and African countries. Since July 2018, she has been the head of the Center for Epidemiology and Surveillance of Infectious Diseases at the RIVM.
