Ph.D. Research

Women and Marriage in Ancient Egypt: A new appraisal of the Marital Property Settlements.

Supervisors: Prof. Olaf Kaper & Dr. Koen Donker van Heel.

My research focuses on marriage in ancient Egyptian society, and especially the way aspects of it are expressed in certain demotic contracts known as marital property settlements. Using anthropological theory and comparative studies of similar texts in the ancient Mediterranean world, I hope to establish a clearer view of how Egyptian marriage worked, what it meant for the spouses, and how it established the social position of Egyptian women.
