Sebastian Sewerin is Lecturer of Environmental Politics at the Institute of Political Science. His research revolves around the co-evolution of policy and technology, with a focus on climate and energy policy. He is particularly interested in long-term policy dynamics and the politics of policy change and his research has helped advancing the empirical measurement of policy design as well as the understanding of the mechanisms behind policy stability and change. More recently, his empirical focus has expanded to energy storage technology (Li-ion batteries) and Green Hydrogen policy.

Sebastian´s work has been published in high-impact scientific journals like Policy & Society, Policy Studies Journal, Policy Sciences, Regulation & Governance, Nature Energy and Research Policy as well as with Oxford University Press (see his Google Scholar profile for all publications). For his paper in Policy & Politics, he has been awarded the 2023 Ken Young Prize.

Prior to joining Leiden, Sebastian held positions as Senior Researcher at National University of Singapore´s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and Swiss Federal University of Technology (ETH) Zurich. Other international stations of his career were at Yale University, European University Institute Florence and TU Delft, among others. He received his PhD from the University of Cologne and defended his Habilitation in Political Science at ETH Zurich in 2023.

He teaches courses on climate and energy policy and environmental politics.
