Rick van Well is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science. His research focuses on explanations of government-opposition cooperation in parliament and is part of the broader research project ‘Who Opposes?’ (Principal Investigator: Dr. Tom Louwerse). It compares established parliamentary democracies with very different political systems: the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Canada. Explanations of government-opposition cooperation will be based on quantitative analyses of parties’ parliamentary behaviour, as well as qualitative analyses of elite interviews.
Previously he was a lecturer in political science at Leiden University and a researcher at ProDemos – House for Democracy and the Rule of Law. He completed a Bachelor in Political Science (2016) and a Research Master in Political Science and Public Administration (2018) at Leiden University. His thesis on executive-legislative relations in Dutch municipalities was awarded with the Research Master Thesis Award and the Jan Brouwerscriptieprijs Maatschappijwetenschappen.
