Radiotherapy with a focus on bone and soft tissue sarcomas

The assignment of this professorship is called: “Radiotherapy with a focus on bone and soft tissue sarcomas”

Although the group of sarcomas comprises a wide variety of different disease entities, in the current preoperative practice, all subtypes are irradiated to a uniform schedule of 25 x 2 Gy in 5 weeks.

The research projects to be initiated by Haas in collaboration with his colleagues of the sarcoma tumor board are (1) looking for an individualization based upon sarcoma subtype, (2) investigating schedules with other fraction sizes and total doses and (3) exploring combination regimens with radiosensitizers.

The relevance of this work entails the effort to keep the treatment associated burden as low as possible for patients, while maintaining treatment efficacy.

Academic career

Rick L.M. Haas has completed his studies in Medicine at the Free University Amsterdam in 1988. Here, in 2006, he defended his thesis entitled: “Low dose radiotherapy in indolent lymphomas, enough is enough”.

He was certified as radiation-oncologist after his training at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital in 1997, where he remained as staff member ever since. Since 2017 he is also appointed as guest staff member at the department of radiotherapy at the LUMC.

He aims to schedule his inaugural speech in 2021.
