Raafat Shamieh is a lecturer at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University.
Raafat Shamieh is a lecturer at the Institute of Political Science at Leiden University. He holds an MSc in Political Science, with a specialisation in International Organisation, from Leiden University (2024), where he wrote his thesis titled “Explaining Iran’s Non-Compliant Behaviour with Regard to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Post-2018.” He also holds a BSc in Political Science, with a focus on International Politics, from Leiden University (2022).
Raafat Shamieh is also a junior researcher and geopolitical analyst specialising in the Middle East and North Africa. He is particularly interested in researching a range of issues related to the region, including democratisation, democratic deficits, authoritarianism, political violence, and the position of women compared to men.
Before joining Leiden University, Raafat worked as a Junior Researcher (intern) with the Middle East research programme at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations (Clingendael), within the Conflict Research Unit. There, he contributed to various research projects focused on conflict dynamics, prospects for political reform and renewal, and other key issues in the Middle East. He was also involved in drafting policy briefs and reports and in providing recommendations to diplomats.
