Professional experience

Pim obtained a BSc degree in Biomedical Sciences (2014) and a MSc degree in Ecology with specialization in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology (2016), both at the VU University in Amsterdam.

During his scientific education Pim conducted several major research projects and developed a growing interest in understanding the effects of chemicals/xenobiotics on living organisms. He extensively investigated the effects of chemicals on the development of obesity, both in in vitro bioassays and by means of systematic reviews with meta-analyses. Furthermore, he investigated the effects of a pesticide mixture on fresh water snails by using metabolomics experiments. These projects resulted in three publications in scientific journals.

Pim conducted his last research project at the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). His research focused on risk assessment of petroleum and coal stream substances, during which he also participated in a European Working Group at the European Chemical Agency (ECHA). Directly after his graduation in 2016, he started a career at the RIVM as an environmental risk assessor, where he is still employed.

Research topic

Pim started his PhD project at the department of Conservation Biology in February 2018 in collaboration with the RIVM. The scope of his project is to improve the risk assessment of emerging chemicals of which we have a low amount of data and knowledge. The overarching aim of this project is to provide new insights in how existing and alternative data could be used more efficiently for risk assessment purposes.
