Pauline Schuyt is working as professor of penal law and sentencing at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden University.

She studied Dutch Law and Dutch Literature and Groningen University. In 1997 she started as a junior lecturer om criminal law and criminal procedure at the Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now called the Radboud University). At the moment she is working as a assistant professor of criminal law and criminal procedure at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden University.


Pauline Schuyt oriented her doctoral thesis particularly towards the determination of and the grounds for teh punishment.  In this thesis she describes the big freedom of the judge with regard to the determination of the punishment and the consequences this has for the sentencing. She argues for a extension of the grounds for the punishment, to account for the use of the big freedom with regard to the determination of the punishment. She will finish her doctoral thesis in 2009. 
In other research she has concerned herself with the following subjects: sentencing and grounds for sentencing in practise, using the instruments for the benefit of the sentencing, and substantial criminal law: participation.
