Further information
Background
Michiel completed his PhD at LIACS, Leiden University, where his dissertation investigated underlying perspectives in debates and mass deliberations to facilitate better understanding of differing opinions. Following his doctoral work, he started as a postdoctoral researcher in multimodal fact-checking at the Idiap Research Institute in Martigny, Switzerland, before returning to LIACS.
Current Projects
His current work explores the intersection of human and artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on Large Language Models (LLMs) that can effectively collaborate with humans while accounting for the nuanced and subjective nature of language. This research contributes to the growing field of Hybrid Intelligence, where human capabilities and AI systems complement each other to achieve better outcomes than either could alone.
