Meredith Sprengel is an External Ph.D. candidate at the Cognitive Psychology Unit at Leiden University under the supervision of Dr. Michiel van Elk and Dr. Aminata Bicego. Her Ph.D. research investigates the psychological, interpersonal, and contextual factors that shape altered states of consciousness and energy-like somatic experiences during interpersonal energy healing rituals.
Her broader research interests focus on the psychological, social, and interpersonal dynamics that underlie healing processes, including the role of placebo effects, ritual, and the moderators and mediators of subjective experience that contribute to both the healing experience and perceived outcomes. She has a background in evaluating integrative medicine approaches as complementary interventions for chronic physical and mental health conditions and in working with foundations to support research in these areas.
