Mateo I. Cohen is a lecturer and doctoral researcher at the Institute of Political Science of Leiden University.
Mateo I. Cohen is a lecturer (docent) and doctoral researcher at the Institute of Political Science of Leiden University.
Mateo is a summa cum laude expert in democracy studies. He published research articles on the Israeli right, conservative ideology, and democratic decay in journals such as the European Constitutional Law Review and Israel Studies. His PhD project analyses and compares ideological justifications in decaying democracies governed by conservative parties.
Mateo has published three books. His 2025 research monograph, Radicalized Conservatism in Israel (Leiden University Press), is a comprehensive investigation of the triangular relations of the Israeli government's ‘one-state ideology’, contemporary Conservatism, and the process of democratic decay.
In addition to his academic position, Mateo has written investigative and opinion pieces on Hebrew platforms such as Haaretz and The Seventh Eye and regularly advises NGOs about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
