Participation in Italy's World Heritage Sites: Analysis of Community Engagement Strategies in Implementing the 1972 UNESCO Convention

The research aims to analyse the current state of community participation in the protection, management, and enhancement of properties inscribed on the World Heritage List in Italy, according to the guidelines of the 1972 UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The first part of the paper will focus on reconstructing the role of UNESCO and the methods of community involvement in implementing the Convention, highlighting how the United Nations organization has integrated communities over time. Subsequently, a review of scientific literature will categorize strategies for community engagement implemented at World Heritage sites worldwide. To provide a systemic analysis of the current state of participation in Italy's World Heritage sites, qualitative and quantitative questionnaire results will be collected from site managers, followed by case studies across the national territory to provide data on the current conditions of engagement in Italy. The ultimate goal is to identify strategies for community engagement implemented by Italian World Heritage sites and provide recommendations to strengthen mechanisms useful for community involvement.
