More information about Maarten Koese

Professional experience

Maarten graduated from the Governance of Sustainability MSc, a program offered by CML and the Leiden University Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs. He wrote his thesis on resource-efficiency in solar PV. Before starting as a PhD candidate he worked at CML as a research assistant, focusing on Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) for renewable energy technologies.

Research topic

Maarten’s research is about resilient and sustainable supply chains of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) for renewable energy ecosystems and strategic sectors. The European Union currently relies on China for over 90% of REE supply, and demand for these materials is expected to grow drastically due to the energy transition and increasing digitalization. This leads to potential supply risks. Maarten will use tools like Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to assess these supply chains. These insights will hopefully contribute to more resilient and sustainable supply of these materials in the future.
