Joeri Reinders is an Assistant Professor of Climate and Earth Science at Leiden University College (LUC) in The Hague. His research focuses on the impact of climate change on hydrological extremes, particularly flooding and droughts, and explores the interaction between climatic variability, flood risk, and earth surface processes.
Joeri's work is interdisciplinary, combining geological and historical records with climate and hydraulic modelling. His PhD research investigated the role of climate change the extreme precipitation and flood event Hurricane Harvey in Texas (2017), using fluvial sediment archives and models like HEC-RAS to assess changes in risk driven by anthropogenic factors. He is currently extending this research to river basins in Mozambique, in collaboration with Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo and fellow LUC colleague Bernardo Almeida, examining how climate variability, increasing flood risk interact with land tenure systems and vulnerable peoples’ land rights.
Beyond his research, Joeri is actively engaged in climate science communication and education. Since 2021, he has been part of the KlimaatHelpdesk, a platform that facilitates interactions between scientists and the public to answer climate-related questions in an accessible way. He has served in a coordinating role within the organization and helped develop new forms of engagement, including video content, serious games, and educational materials. One such initiative is the KlimaatCasino, a climate adaptation simulation that has been featured at public festivals and at the Dutch national Climate Citizens’ Assembly (Klimaat Burgerberaad), and is now being developed into an online resource for vocational (MBO) education.
Joeri also organizes the education working group of the Klimaatonderzoek Initiatief Nederland (KIN PACT), which was recently awarded a grant to create a national platform to assess and share climate education materials for Dutch secondary schools.
At LUC, Joeri teaches courses on climate change, natural disasaters, earth system science, research design, and GIS. He is also engaged in interdisciplinary teaching and outreach, including a collaboration with ARTEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem, where he facilitated workshops for architecture students on integrating environmental science and artistic practice.
