My research focuses on the political sociology of North Korea using surveys and interviews with cross-border migrants, but I have also published widely on North Korean politics, economy, contemporary PRC foreign policy vis-a-vis the DPRK, and contemporary South Korean broadcast media portrayals of North Korean defectors. I am the former Manager of International Affairs for Daily NK, a digital periodical covering North Korean affairs based in Seoul, South Korea, and translator of the memoir of a senior North Korean defector, Hwang Jang-yop. My latest book, Continuity and Change in North Korean Politics, was published in November 2016.
