Bastiaan van Ganzen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Tax Law. In addition, he is the Academic Coordinator of the Pre-PhD Programme at the Graduate School of Legal Studies.
Research
Bastiaan van Ganzen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Tax Law. His current research focusses on fiscal sociology: the study of the relationship between tax law and society. Specific themes in his work include distributive justice, the political economy of taxation, and public support for tax policies. He approaches these themes from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, drawing on insights and methods from law, economics, sociology and philosophy.
Education
He holds an LL.B. in Dutch Law and an LL.M. in Tax Law (summa cum laude) from Leiden University and an M.Sc. in Economics (cum laude) from Utrecht University. In 2025, he obtained his PhD for his thesis titled ‘Dynamism and Democracy: Essays on the Fiscal Social Contract in a Globalised World’.
Teaching
He coordinates the fiscal-sociological course Tax Law and Society in the LLM programme in Tax Law. He also teaches the LLM course General Principles of Tax Law and supervises bachelor’s and master’s theses.
In addition, he is the Academic Coordinator of the Pre-PhD Programme at the Graduate School of Legal Studies.
