My main field of research is vascular disease, in particular that of the brain.
Antithrombotic treatments
I was and am involved in several multicenter secondary prevention trials with antithrombotic treatments, mainly in patients with minor ischaemic stroke. One of these trials (SPIRIT) had to be stopped early because of a high frequency of major bleeding complications. This unanticipated finding forms a strong motive for my current research: why did these patients with minor ischaemic stroke of arterial origin have such a high bleeding propensity as compared with patients with other vascular diseases? And can we identify the patients prone to bleed and use that information to optimise antithrombotic treatment in the prevention of further ischaemic complications? I trust that my combined appointment at Leiden UMC and UMC Utrecht will be fruitful in addressing these questions.
