Leiden Centre of Data Science
Data Science is a new and important field of study. With an ever increasing amount of data being produced worldwide, there is great need for people who are able to transform this data into valuable and useful information.
Students who want to become experts in this field have many options at Leiden University.
The Leiden Centre of Data Science offers a minor in Data Science for bachelor students. This programme provides an introduction to the theory and practice of Data Science, featuring modules such as Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence and Applied Statistics. Students will learn how to discover patterns in large datasets and how to analyse, interpret and visualise data.
Furthermore, LCDS closely collaborates with the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), which offers an MSc in Computer Science. In 2015, this programme was ranked as best of its kind in The Netherlands. Students who are interested in Data Science are particularly encouraged to follow the track Computer Science and Advanced Data Analytics within this programme. This specialisation offers future-oriented topics in computer science, with a focus on the foundations and applications of smart computing technologies. From September 2016, two new Master's specialisations will start: Data Science: Computer Science and Data Science: Statistical Science. These specialisations are a unique collaboration between the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science (LIACS), the Mathematical Institute (MI) and the Leiden Centre of Data Science.
Other relevant programmes are BSc programmes in Computer Science, Mathematics and Computer Science & Biology (all taught in Dutch), and the MSc programmes in Bioinformatics, Mathematics and Statistical Science for the Life and Behavioural Sciences (taught in English).
After completing a master’s programme in Computer Science or a related field, students are admissible to a PhD programme in Data Science.
