Today’s complex societal problems require people to collaborate in new ways to find solutions. As institutions that prepare future citizens and problem-solvers, universities play a crucial role in helping students learn how to tackle problems from multiple disciplinary perspectives and communicate effectively across fields. However, because interdisciplinary projects are still relatively new in higher education, many lecturers who were trained within single disciplines may lack familiarity with the most effective approaches to interdisciplinary teaching. This project seeks to generate practical insights and evidence that can help lecturers better understand how to guide their students, thereby fostering the development of students’ competencies through interdisciplinary teaching.

Research questions

  • What is the relationship between different pedagogical approaches and the development of student competencies within interdisciplinary teaching contexts?
  • How do lecturers instruct and support learning activities in interdisciplinary teaching courses, and how do students perceive this instructional support?
  • What are the mechanisms of collaboration within interdisciplinary student teams, such as knowledge sharing, emotional sharing, and shared ownership?
  • How do lecturers identify and leverage these team collaboration mechanisms to further support and facilitate student learning?
