New: Du Plessis-Mornay Fellowship

This year the new Du Plessis-Mornay Fellowship is open for applications for the first time. The Fellowship keeps alive the memory of Huguenot theologian and politician Philippe Du Plessis-Mornay (1549–1623), who was a leading figure among French Protestants in his day. In the Netherlands, he remains renowned as one of the most important associates of Prince William of Orange, serving in this capacity as a connecting link—a trait d’union—within the French-speaking Protestant world between the Netherlands and France.

Du Plessis-Mornay Fellows will conduct research into the history of French-speaking Protestantism in the Netherlands, utilizing source material from the collection of the Bibliothèque Wallonne, supplemented by material from the rich Special Collections of the Leiden University Libraries and the Print Room.

Scaliger Institute fellowships

The Scaliger Institute offers several fellowships, each with a different focus. The Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship offers the opportunity to three scholars to spend up to three months conducting research using the Southeast Asian and particularly the Indonesian special collections. We especially invite Indonesian scholars to apply for the fellowship.

The long-running Brill Fellowship is sponsored by Leiden-based Brill publishing house and awards one or more fellowships yearly to researchers working on Brill publishing areas in the Humanities. For researchers interested in conducting scientific research on the extensive Leiden Digital Collections, the Scaliger Institute offers the Elsevier Fellowship for Digital Scholarship.

The Juynboll Fellowship and Drewes Fellowship provide funds to scholars studying Islam in the Arabic world and Islamic mysticism in Indonesia respectively. The Arminius Fellowship supports research into Special Collections relating to the Remonstrant movement, and the Wouter Swets Fellowship promotes research into holdings relating to musical traditions of the Balkans, Turkey and Central Asia. Researchers interested in studying the extensive Leiden University collections relating to Japanese culture and language can apply for the Isaac Alfred Ailion Fellowship, which offers both a junior and a senior fellowship. The Robert van Gulik Fellowship offers opportunities to conduct research into the life or work of Van Gulik, or into subjects concerning Chinese art and literature, using source material from the Van Gulik Collection, the Van Gulik Archive and the UBL Special Collections at large. The Bibliotheca Thysiana Fellowship was founded in 2026 and is focused on the research into the late humanist collection that has been kept virtually unchanged in the eponymous library on the Rapenburg canal in Leiden since the 17th century. The only fellowship without financial compensation is the Scaliger Fellowship, which offers a workspace and facilities to visiting scholars from the Netherlands and abroad.

“One thing that makes the fellowship programme a great experience is that you get to meet very interesting people from around the world. It really is an interaction between the fellows and us, they learn from us and we learn from them. When the fellows return to their own universities, they go back to work enriched with knowledge.”
