From Copenhagen to Campus: Denmark's EU Presidency

Ongoing challenges such as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, rising global strategic and economic competition, and accelerating climate change have major consequences for the EU and its member states.

On 9 October, Leiden University students had the opportunity to hear Ms Lotte Machon, State Secretary for Foreign Policy of Denmark, speak about the priorities of Denmark’s EU Presidency under the slogan 'A strong Europe in a changing world'. She knew exactly how many days had passed from the start of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Following her keynote, Machon joined a panel with Heleen Bakker (Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Dr Louise van Schaik (Clingendael Institute), and Professor Antoaneta Dimitrova (Leiden University and Europe Hub Steering Committee Member), moderated by Wouter Zweers (Clingendael Institute).

Student questions raised all the important themes in European and world politics – from the investments in defence versus the Green Deal, to regulation versus innovation in the EU, how drones can be a part of EU’s preparedness for 2030 and many others.

The event was supported by Leiden University’s Europe Hub.
