Atte Ahola wins Global Undergraduate Award 2025

Atte Ahola, who graduated last year from the bachelor’s programme in Urban Studies, has won the award for Best Undergraduate Thesis in Europe in the category of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the Global Undergraduate Awards 2025.

His thesis, Quality over Quantity? Perceived neighbourhood greenery, not objective, linked to higher wellbeing in Germany, shows that how people perceive greenery in their neighbourhoods has a stronger link to wellbeing than the actual amount of green space.

Exceptional student

The thesis was supervised by Rita Sousa Silva, who says, ‘Supervising Atte was genuinely rewarding. He was an exceptional student who did a fantastic job, and I couldn't be prouder of him and of how far he took the project.’ After completing his Bachelor's studies, Ahola continued on to the Master’s programme in Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Helsinki, Finland.

About the Award

The Global Undergraduate Awards is a pan-disciplinary awards programme celebrating exceptional research. Each year, thousands of students submit their work for independent review by a panel of international academics and industry specialists. All winning entrants are recognised with a Certificate of Recognition and the publication of their submission on The Undergraduate Library. The 25 Global Winners also receive a Gold Medal, fully funded travel and a free ticket to attend the annual GUA Global Summit.
