Winners of Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship 2022

Earlier this year, the Leiden University Libraries (UBL) Scaliger Institute announced a new fellowship: The Lingling Wiyadharma Fellowship. The fellowship programme is part of the Lingling Wiyadharma Fund.

Hans van der Valk, alumnus of Leiden University, founded the Lingling Wiyadharma Fund in memory of his wife Lingling Wiyadharma, whom he met in the early 1970s when he was a diplomat at the Dutch embassy in Jakarta.

The aim of the Lingling Wiyadharma Fund for Indonesian Studies is to promote the use of the Indonesian collections of the UBL. The fund was established at the beginning of 2022 at the Leiden University Fund.

The fellowship programme annually offers three preferably young academics the opportunity and financial support to conduct up to three months of research in our Southeast Asian and in particular the Indonesian Special Collections.

The call for proposals received an overwhelming response. An assessment committee made up of Diana Suhardiman (Professor of Natural Resource Governance, Climate and Equity, Leiden University & Director KITLV), Nico Kaptein (Professor of Islam in Southeast Asia, Leiden University), with an advisory role from Marije Plomp (Subject Librarian Southeast Asia, UBL), selected three winners.

And the winners are:

Chin Nyuk Tin, PhD Candidate at Nanyang Technological University, School of Humanities, Singapore.

Her research is titled Agent of Change and Exchange: Sino-Malay Translation for the Making of the Peranakan Chinese in Netherlands Indies (1881-1951).

Arman Az, independent researcher and writer.

He will be working on a catalogue of manuscripts from Lampung province. The manuscripts were collected and housed in Leiden by Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk (1868-1869).

Evi Fuji Fauziyah, MA candidate in Philology, Universitas Padjadjaran, Faculty of Cultural Science, Bandung.

She conducts research on Tiga Jñana: The Codicological Studies of an Old Sundanese Codex Unicus at the Leiden University Library.

We expect to welcome the first Lingling Wiyadharma Fellows in Leiden in October of this year.
