Cancelled: Combined LRL – ILS Lunch Seminar with Maria Weimer on Risk Regulation in the Internal Market

On Thursday 23 May, a jointly organized Lunch Seminar between the Leiden Research Lunch and the research program Interaction Between Legal Systems takes place. In this special seminar we have the honour of receiving Maria Weimer from the University of Amsterdam, who will present her new book on "Risk Regulation in the Internal Market."

THIS LECTURE HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Maria Weimer is an assistant professor in EU law at the Law Faculty of the University of Amsterdam. Also, she is a senior researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance (ACELG) and the interdisciplinary Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES). In this combined LRL - ILS Lunch Seminar, she will give a presentation on “Risk regulation in the internal market - paradoxes and pitfalls”, based on her new book that has just been published.

In her book, Weimer analyses the drawbacks of the EU approach to agricultural biotechnology. She shows that its reductionism, i.e. the narrow understanding of GMO risks as well as the exclusion of broader societal concerns related to environmental and social sustainability, has undermined both the legitimacy and effectiveness of EU regulation in this area. Resistance to this approach however has also triggered legal innovations prompting us to re-think EU internal market law, including the way in which it manages the tensions between unity and diversity, and between social and economic concerns.

This combined LRL - ILS Lunch Seminar will take place on Thursday 23 May from 13:00 – 14:00 hrs. in KOG A0.14. Lunch is provided and there is no need to register, just join!
