Canal Run raises over €22,000 for charity

A respectable 5,023 runners took part in the Leiden Canal Run on Friday 5 April. They raised the sum of €22,302 for various Leiden charities.

This year’s Canal Run was extra special: not only was it the 44th edition of the race, but Leiden University is celebrating its 444th anniversary too. To celebrate this, the University donated 44 cents per entrant to charity, bumping up the sum raised per runner to €4.44. This goes to various Leiden organisations including Issoria Hospice, Van Velsen Care Farm and Leiden Toonkunst Orchestra.

The University staff turned out in their droves, with large teams representing the different faculties – the Faculty of Science with an impressive team of 120. Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker was accompanied by his speedy daughters, and several deans and other members of the Executive Board joined in too.

Marco van Erp and Leone de Voogd were the first man and woman over the finish line. ‘But,’ as Leiden radio station Sleutelstad quite rightly said on its website, ‘the real winners were the charities.’
