Call for abstracts: LLRC one-day conference

The Language Learning Resource Centre at Leiden University is organizing a one-day conference (June 7th, 2019) on the topic of teaching language and intercultural communicative competence in higher education.

Conference

The object of this one-day conference is to share current findings and best practices on the topic of language learning and language teaching in conjunction with the promotion of intercultural communicative competence (ICC). We are proud to announce that the keynote speaker will be none other than Professor Mike Byram of Durham University, who is a leading expert in ICC.

We would like to invite colleagues to submit proposals for contributions on this topic. Presentations can focus on research in this area or they might take the form of an exposé of good practice. Abstracts of 200 words can be submitted before 15 March 2019 via this link. Accepted presentations will be assigned a time-slot of 30 minutes, including questions.

The focus of the day will be on higher education, but proposals discussing relevant research or best practices in other educational settings are also welcome.

If you are interested in making a more practical contribution, it is also possible to submit a proposal for a workshop of 75 minutes. Workshop proposals can be submitted via the same link as abstracts for presentations.

Potential subjects to be discussed include (the list is not exhaustive):

- Taboo topics in the language classroom (e.g. on politics): yes or no, which ones, how?
- To what extent should/may the teacher expose his/her own opinions?
- How to integrate language and intercultural content in the classroom
- The role of the language teacher in promoting intercultural communicative competence
- Institutional policies regarding intercultural (communicative) competence in higher education

Abstracts/workshop proposals can be submitted through this form.
