International conference 'Who determines the security (research) agenda?' 9-10 November: registration open
The Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) organizes the ISGA Conference ‘Who determines the security (research) agenda’ on 9 - 10 November 2016 in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Also wondering who should take the lead in facing key contemporary challenges like terrorism, cyber-attacks and hybrid warfare, how different actors work together on these issues and what the challenges of collaboration are?
Join more than 50 leading experts in the field of international relations, cyber and security studies at the international conference 'Who determines the security (research) agenda?' organized by the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) of Leiden University on 9-10 November 2016 in The Hague, The Netherlands.
With speakers and attendees from both academia and the policy and practice worlds, this event provides key opportunities to discuss ideas and exchange contacts. The programme is specifically designed to accommodate such networking opportunities and to gain not only academic input but also practical output.
Programme highlights
Just added to the programme are keynote speaker David A. Baldwin from Princeton University and panel member J.M. Berger from the ICCT and Georgetown University. Mr. Baldwin is Senior Political Scientist in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. At ISGA Conference 2016 Mr. Baldwin will dig deeper into the concept of power related to security and global affairs issues.
Mr. Berger is a researcher, analyst and consultant, with a special focus on extremist activities in the United States and extremist propaganda and use of social media. At ISGA Conference 2016 he will focus on the status of ISIS on the upcoming security agenda. "We are entering a period of rapid change in the extremist landscape, and our governments and institutions are not always able to respond to new conditions as quickly as necessary", according to Berger. "The question of how we decide what research to pursue is more important than ever, if we want to get ahead of new challenges, rather than always fighting the last war. We need resources to research diverse topics in order to anticipate tomorrow's security challenges, and to help us understand the problem of violent extremism beyond the jihadist frame".
