A day in our classroom
Are you interested in studying Psychology in Leiden, but not yet sure what it is all about? Join the Experience Day for the International Bachelor in Psychology and get a student perspective by participating in sample lectures and by walking around the faculty building. Ask your questions and find out what it's like to study Psychology in Leiden!
Programme
Psychology is a broad academic discipline consisting of various topics. To get an idea of this, you will attend two sample lectures, each on a different psychological subject. You will do a homework assignment to prepare for this. Just like for a real lecture! Moreover, you will receive information on the study itself and hear about future perspectives. Students will share their personal stories and will be ready to answer all your questions.

Lecture 1: Emotions and the Brain
What is this lecture about?
In this lecture, you will explore what emotions are, how we regulate them, how we express them, and why they play such an important role in our daily lives. You will also discover which areas of the brain are involved in emotions and how they work together.
Preparation
To prepare for this lecture, please watch the video about patient SM. She has damage to the brain area called the amygdala, which plays a key role in processing emotions.
Lecture 2: When two (or more) become one: The Psychology of Groups
What is this lecture about?
Ever wondered what binds people together? In this short lecture, you will get an introduction to group dynamics. You will explore how groups form, why it hurts to be excluded, and why we are susceptible to peer pressure.
Preparation
We’ll explore how we recognize groups. Before we meet, do a brief field observation in a supermarket: Who seems “together”? Your task is to notice nonverbal signs that suggest people belong together or not. Nonverbal means that they should not be talking with each other – that would be too obvious. You can use this file.
Good to know
Leiden University offers the Bachelor Psychologie (mainly in Dutch with English elements) and the International Bachelor in Psychology (in English). If you prefer to participate in the Experience Day in Dutch, also on 13 April, please go to the Dutch Proefstuderen event page.
