Samenvatting
Height functions measure the arithmetic complexity of numbers. Among them, there is a distinguished choice, called the canonical height, which decomposes into an Archimedean part and a non-Archimedean part. We study how the Archimedean part varies in a family and, in particular, how it behaves when the family degenerates. Our study predicts that this asymptotic behaviour is controlled by a non-Archimedean height associated with the family. In this sense, our work establishes a connection between the Archimedean and non-Archimedean worlds.
