On 4 October of this year, Mozambique will commemorate 34 years since the signing of the Rome Peace Accords, which brought an end to the country’s 16-year civil war. Despite noticeable progress in development indicators during the post-conflict period, the establishment of entities that support the functioning of a multiparty democratic system, and the absence of nationwide armed conflict, Mozambique has experienced repeated incidents of politically motivated violence in various parts of the country. These episodes raise the question of whether contemporary forms of violence can be understood as “continuities” of previous conflicts.

To explore the ways in which conflicts legacies of past conflicts create propagative forces for new conflicts, I propose this event with the aim pf bringing together scholars researching contemporary conflicts in Mozambique to reflect on how conflict continuities are manifested and can be identified in their ongoing research. Although the event will focus on Mozambique, it also aims to draw on the expertise of scholars associated with the various organizing entities of the event to introduce comparative perspectives from conflicts in other parts of the world.

The event is open to the general public, but registration is required by 27 September. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee space for walk-in attendees.
