On 10 September, IIAS Fellow Dr Ming Yang from Beijing Foreign Studies University will give a hands-on (in-person) workshop introducing how body, voice, gesture, and rhythm work together in xiqu performance.
Xiqu is often first encountered through elaborate costumes, makeup, and highly stylized movement. This workshop begins elsewhere: with the performer's body and voice. Designed for non-specialists, it offers a practical introduction to several basic principles that organize xiqu performance.
