7-week course for professionals

Do you work in policy, law, diplomacy or humanitarian aid? Then you know how urgent issues such as human rights, sustainability and food security are in a world shaped by climate change, conflict and growing inequality. The English-taught course Human Rights and International Law at Leiden University College offers you the opportunity to sharpen your legal compass and apply your knowledge directly to pressing global challenges.

This 7-week course is part of the national pilot on microcredentials – accredited, flexible learning modules designed specifically for professionals. You will explore topics such as the legal meaning of the right to food, the impact of war and climate change on food systems, the limits of humanitarian assistance and international accountability, and how starvation as a method of warfare is assessed under international law. The course takes SDG 2: Zero Hunger as its central framework.

One of the unique features is the contribution of a diverse group of guest lecturers. Previous editions have included:

  • A cultural anthropologist from Leiden University;

  • The senior legal adviser on international humanitarian law at the Netherlands Red Cross;

  • A researcher from the German Institute for Human Rights;

  • An associate professor from South Africa.

Knowledge:

  • Assess the Sustainable Development Goals and reflect on their legal value.

  • Identify and interpret the legal rules relevant to food security, both in peace and wartime.

  • Analyse how the different relevant (international) legal frameworks interact.

  • Analyse the relevant mechanisms in terms of accountability.

Skills:

  • Critically reflect on the limits of the relevant legal frameworks.

  • Capacity to discern legal implications from broader ones.

  • Learn where to find legal sources and how to interpret and apply them.

The course comprises a total of 5 European Credits (EC) and the total cost is €850.*

Microcredentials are recognised, short academic modules that allow professionals to deepen their knowledge without committing to a full degree programme. At FGGA, you can enrol as a contract student in specific courses leading to a microcredential: a reliable certificate that confirms your knowledge and skills upon successful completion of the course.

This offering is aimed at professionals seeking academic enrichment without registering for a full-time degree. You will attend the same lectures and sit the same exams as regular students.

This course will be based on two assessments:

1) A newspaper article assignment

  • 30 % of final grade

  • Re-sit not possible

  • Grade must be compensated

2) A final exam – combination of multiple choice and open questions (digital)

  • 70% of final grade

  • Grade must be 5,5 or higher to pass the course

  • Resit of a fail is possible

  • Resit will take the same form
