Using photogrammetry apps to support interactive learning

There is a 3-D scanning device sitting in your pocket.  Most smartphones today can be used to make detailed digital models of the objects and architectures that surround us.

This lecture will explore techniques for using these free 3-D scanning applications to support interactive teaching in a hybrid classroom.

Object-based learning

Object-based learning has been around for millennia. The benefits of absorbing information while handling an object and examining it at close range have been well established. Such object-based methods fail, however, in a hybrid setting where on site students can actively engage, while online students watch passively from their screens.

Comenius Teaching Fellowship

This lecture draws on research from an ongoing Comenius Teaching Fellowship devoted to remedying this inequity. Steven Lauritano is currently developing a “Hybrid-Object Lab” – an online platform which combines live video feeds with manipulatable 3-D models. Such a platform would enable on site students to share 3-D scans of objects, while remote students “sample” and exchange comparative material from their own environments.

Leiden Teachers' Academy

This Lunch Lecture is initiated by the Leiden Teachers' Academy (LTA) and aims for teaching staff who want to improve their teaching. A vegetarian lunch is available.
