African Studies Centre Leiden
The African Studies Centre Leiden is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa.
Since it was founded, some 70 years ago, the African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL) has become one of the world’s leading centres for the study and dissemination of knowledge about Africa. Its academic research, which is primarily in the social sciences and the humanities, has a strong empirical base and is also attentive to policy debates. The ASCL has an extensive library with one of the best Africana collections in Europe. The Centre contributes to education and teaching, e.g. in the African Studies Master and Research Master at Leiden University. It has a research seminar programme and publishes nine different series. The ASCL closely cooperates with colleagues and institutes in Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. Today, the Centre is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University. Since 2016 the ASCL has coordinated the Leiden African Studies Assembly (LeidenASA), a network of all Leiden Africanists.
