Visit the Old Observatory

The Old Observatory is still used intensively as a university building. Yet there is still plenty to see and experience in this beautiful monument. Find out what the possibilities are here.

Visitor Center

If you are visiting the Hortus botanicus Leiden, you can combine it with a visit to the Old Observatory. At the end of the botanical garden you will find the visitors center of the Old Observatory. Here we show a new exhibition every year about the interface between astronomy and society. You can combine your visit with a guided tour by an astronomy student. In addition to the exhibition, the student will also take you to one of our historic telescopes. Please note that to visit the Old Observatory and the botanical garden, you need to purchase two separate tickets.

Private Tours

In addition to the walk-in tours at the visitor center, we also offer the opportunity to book private tours for groups. These tours are scheduled for a day and time suitable for your group and are available from as little as €65. A personalized experience for young and old, for friends or colleagues!

Open evenings

Monthly open evenings are also organized by one of Leiden's amateur astronomy societies. For only €4 per person you can enjoy an astronomical lecture and (depending on the weather) observation time with the telescopes.
