Visit the Old Observatory
The Old Observatory is still used intensively as a university building. Yet there is still plenty to see and experience in this beautiful monument. Find out what the possibilities are here.
Old Observatory closed
Leiden University follows up on the advice of the RIVM and Rijksoverheid and takes new measures to minimize the spread of the corona virus Covid 19. Because of that, the Old Observatory will close it's doors for the time being. See this page for the latest updates. All events will be cancelled an guided tours cannot continue either. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you signed up for any events or booked a private tour in this period, you will be contacted as soon as possible.
Open two times a week for visits in combination with the Hortus Botanicus Leiden
If you visit Hortus Botanicus Leiden on Saturday or Sunday, you can combine it with a visit to the Old Observatory. At the far end of the botanical garden you will find the visitor center of the Old Observatory. Here, you can walk through an exhibition about the last 100 years of discoveries made in astronomy. You can also take part in a fun walk-in tour during your visit! Read more about our visitor centre. Opening times of the visitor center (on weekends only):
- Summer (April 1st - October 31st): 10:00 - 18:00
- Winter (November 1st - March 31st): 10:00 - 16:00
Guided tours and open evenings
In addition to free guided tours of half an hour at the visitor centre, we also offer the possibility to book private tours for groups. These guided tours can be planned for a date and time of your preference and are available from €65. Read more about our guided tours.
Monthly open evenings are also organised by one of the Leiden societies for amateur astronomy. For only €4 per person you can enjoy an astronomical lecture and (depending on the weather) observation time with the telescopes. Read more about our open evenings.
