Old Observatory Leiden

The Old Observatory of Leiden is the oldest surviving university observatory in the world. While students of Leiden University receive lectures in the main part of the building, the visitor center in the basement and the telescopes on the building serve the general public. Here you will find information about visits to the Old Observatory's visitor center and the telescopes and its history, tours, events and societies.

Open six days a week for tours

Tuesday through Sunday you can join us for a guided tour. For €10 we will take you on an hour long journey into the history of the Old Observatory and show you how scientists used to take pictures of the universe.
