In the immediate aftermath of their father’s sudden passing, Mariam and Nora must devise an elaborate scheme to get their hands on the money he left behind before their brother can stake his legal claim to it. The ensuing events, equal parts humorous and heartbreaking, foreground the severe gender inequality inscribed in inheritance law. Thank You For Banking With Us is Laila Abbas’ debut feature. It premiered in competition at the 2024 London Film Festival and subsequently won the Best Director award at El Gouna Film Festival in Egypt.

About the director

Laila Abbas is a Palestinian filmmaker and producer who studied cinema in Jordan before pursuing an MA in Film and TV Production at Royal Holloway University in the UK. She made her mark with the documentary ‘Ice & Dust’ (2013), and in 2016, founded Young Oak Productions. Abbas’s work focuses on exploring gender, family, and societal struggles, and she has gained recognition for her insightful storytelling.
