A film by Mohsen Makhmalbaf | Iran | 1995 | 75 min | In Persian with English subtitles
For the 100th anniversary of Cinema, Mohsen Makhmalbaf - the most controversial and popular Iranian filmmaker - placed a casting ad in newspapers for 100 actors to audition for his new film, Salaam cinema. More than 5000 people showed up and a near riot occurs. Over the next eight days Makhmalbaf auditions 1000 applicants and shoots all the procedures as the main part of his film. What began as a simple casting call quickly turned into a moving portrait of people’s dreams, ambitions, and their yearning to be seen. Salaam Cinema stands as a classic of Iranian cinema, blurring the line between fiction and reality and revealing both the magic and tension of filmmaking itself.
