Grading

Please find below information on - who grades which exams - the Dutch grading system - uploading grades in Brightspace - archiving exams

Grading by ICLON, tutors and lecturers

After the administration collects the finished exams they are processed according to their type:

  • Multiple choice exams are sent to ICLON in Leiden where they are graded and then returned to the lecturer
  • Open question core module exams are sent to the tutors who grade and return them to the lecturer
  • Area exams are sent straight to the lecturer for grading.

Dutch grading system

In a Dutch system grades translate into words as follows:
10: Perfect (this grade is hardly ever given, except  for multiple choice exams)
9: Excellent
8: Good
7: More than satisfactory
6: Satisfactory
5: Almost satisfactory
4: Unsatisfactory
3: Very unsatisfactory
2: Poor
1: Very poor
One decimal can be attributed to all grades (e.g.: 8.3, 7.9, 6.5), save for the interval between 5 and 6 in the final grade (e.g.: 5.5 in the final grade is not applicable)

Grade submission procedure

After the exams are graded, the lecturer or the tutor (depends on the course) uploads the grades on Brightspace.

Please note:

  • grades have one decimal at most (7.75 is not valid);
  • grading 7- or 8+ are not allowed - only numbers and decimals;
  • no grades under 1 are allowed;
  • no end grades between 5 and 6 are given; 5.49 is rounded to a 5, 5.5 is rounded to a 6.

Archiving exams

After the exams are graded, the lecturer must submit them back to the administration, which in turn ensures that they are properly archived. The exams are kept in hard copy and accessible for three years after the submission date.

Resit exams ('Resits')

The procedure for resits is identical to regular exams except that the exam material should cover the whole course (both mid-term and final). Students are obliged to take the exam at the first opportunity - no resits are allowed without having participated in the regular exams. Students who are not able to take a mid-term or final exam need to contact the coordinator of studies before the exam. Students who were unable to be present at the exam, no matter what the reason for their absence was, will see a ‘1’ in their grade list in uSis for this exam. There is no separate resit for the midterm exam. The resit of the exam covers both the material for the mid-term and the final exam. By taking this resit, a student will be able to resit the mid-term and final exam at the same time. Taking the resit instead of the first chance exam does not entitle to another resit. This is the second and final chance exam. If a student has made the mid-term exam, but not the final exam, the resit of the final exam will replace the grade of the mid-term exam. If the assessment is based on an essay instead of an exam, students who do not receive a passing grade can re-submit. The maximum grade in this case will be a 6 (pass).
