A year in a Nutshell by the Alumni Association: how can you join?

Hello alumni! What’s new? We hope that you are doing well no matter the part of the world you may find yourself in now. We have been busy building our social media channels, connecting alumni locally in the cities they live in now, and organizing both virtual and in-person events. Keep on reading to find out what we have been up to in the past year and how to join us if you want to contribute!

If you have ideas about what you would like to see from the Alumni Association, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can reach out to us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram or send us an email at baisalumniassociation@gmail.com.

What happened last year?

One of the most important challenges for any alumni association is to maintain the feeling of connection, be it in physical or virtual space. We celebrated 9 years of International Studies online during the 2021 Virtual Alumni Reunion, yet 2022 has represented the comeback of in-person events and gatherings. We naturally made sure to include some opportunities for alumni to meet up in real life once restrictions were lifted.

Virtual Alumni Reunion
August 12, 2021

This was the second time that we organized the reunion online due to the pandemic, but we tried our best to keep the event interactive and light. We got older alumni up to speed on what has changed on the campus, provided opportunities for alumni to connect with others across the different generations of BAIS, and organized a friendly pub quiz to see who can still remember the exact definition of Orientalism… The highlight of the event was no doubt the incredible Vlad Adam, an alumnus from the first generation of BAIS who had agreed to speak at the event — and boy does he know how to tell a story.

Mastering the Art of Finding a Master’s
November 18, 2021

Due to popular demand, we teamed up once again with the BASIS Career Committee to bring about the second edition of Mastering the Art of Choosing a Master’s. We invited International Studies Alumni studying at SciencesPo, Graduate Institute of Geneva, Lund University, King’s College, University of Oxford, University of Amsterdam — and of course, Leiden University. They shared valuable insights into what student life is in the different countries where these universities are based, and some dos and don'ts for choosing a program and the application process.

Alumni Get-together at Foodhallen
March 1, 2022

After a year of virtual events, we finally got to meet each other face-to-face! Some 15 alumni showed up at the Foodhallen to reconnect with old friends and make new friends from different generations of BAIS.

Speed Networking with Alumni
April 30, 2022

This year we had the 4th edition of our annual speed networking event — good to keep the traditions alive! We were happy to be able to organize this event in person once again and connect alumni with current students and young graduates. We started off with 3 rounds of speed networking where participants could chat with 3 different alumni and ask anything about finding a job and post-uni life. The great interactions between them made this event a success!

Borrel & Rooftop Party
April 30, 2022

What a night! We had an amazing time at the Bleyenberg in the Hague with over 30 alumni dropping by over the evening, and not just recent graduates but also alumni who started International Studies back in 2013. As planned, we did end up going to the rooftop eventually, and about a dozen alumni stayed until the bar closed (and beyond?). If there was an afterparty, the board members are not aware of it since most of us called it quits around 1 am.
