Highly ranked & Loads of Choices: pursue an MA at Leiden University

On 2 November, more than 800 hundred students visited Leiden's Humanities Faculty to explore their options during the Master's Open Day. So why should you consider a MA at Leiden?

The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden focusses on the mobility of people, languages, culture, ideas, art and institutions in a globalising world, and their interconnectivity through the ages. All this research based education is offered in 75+ specialisations. MA studies like Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, North American Studies, Latin American Studies, African Studies, Russian and Eurasian Studies and MA International Relations, are worth exploring if you are a student of BA International Studies.

We interviewed current students and visitors of the Master’s Open Day of the Humanities Faculty to hear about their experiences.

BA International Studies alumna Lisa Schäfer decided to go for the MA international Relations in 2015, specialisation European Union Studies. "The toughest challenge for my education was to specialise. With a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies, my undergraduate education was very broad and I wanted to focus on a more specific policy area. The Master’s programme in European Union Studies at Leiden University offered a unique practical perspective on EU politics which is the major reason why I decided to complete this master. After graduating and finishing a seven month internship with the EEAS (European External Action Service) in South Korea, I got hired by the Boston Consulting Group in London within their Data and Research Services team. Hence, I am now living in London (UK) since July 2016 where I work as an associate analyst."

Mathijs, a graduate of Tilburg University visited the Master's Open Day: “‘I’m looking for a programme that’s more economically and internationally focused, and the MA International Relations in Leiden is ranked highly in the Netherlands. I went to a couple of presentations and also watched some live streams of presentations in The Hague. I’d recommend others to also go to a ‘Student for a Day’ event, as you’ll actually attend some courses. Earlier this year, I went to the International Relations’ Student for a Day event and it really helped me get a better idea of the programme on a more personal level.”

Rosa , student Leiden University: “‘I’m now studying for my bachelor’s in Leiden as well, but I really like the city and the Faculty of Humanities offers a lot of master programmes. I went to several presentations and visited the Meet & Greet afterwards. I had different expectations of the MA Book and Digital Media Studies, but I like that you’re able to do an internship during the MA Journalistiek en Nieuwe Media.  I think it would’ve been nice to hear more from students during the presentations, but luckily you can also talk with them during the Meet & Greet.”
