What's Next? "Creativity Within and Beyond Academia"

Curious about the career paths of Creative Intelligence & Technology MSc alumni? The first session of this academic year's "What's Next?" alumni talk series is organized around the theme of “Creativity Within and Beyond Academia”. It features two alumni, Dan Xu and Marise van Noordenne, whose work is related to the exploration and creation of contexts conducive to creativity.

With the What's Next? series we hope to inspire current Creative Intelligence & Technology students, show the variety of paths taken after the studies, and bring together alumni and students. Editions of the series are generally organized around a particular theme, organised by Creative Intelligence & Technology students themselves, and followed by social drinks.

This edition is about “Creativity within and beyond Academia”. It will feature two alumni, Dan Xu and Marise van Noordenne, whose work is related to the exploration and creation of contexts conducive to creativity.

Dan Xu's professional experience reflects a true creative mind both within and beyond academia. Her PhD thesis and postdoctoral research investigates the creative possibilities of computational media and how they shape and mediate our embodied and social realities. Her work as a Digital Transformation Designer at the Digital Society School and her contribution to the Screen-to-SoundScape project, which was awarded the Processing Foundation Fellowship in 2024, reveal the potential of creatively connecting the digital and the physical for social purposes.

Marise van Noordenne's work falls under the same premise of duality in terms of creativity application. Her scope as a creative technologist lies in the effort to merge critical and creative methods to “foster technological literacy”; at the same time, she has experience as a graphic, interaction, and visual designer. She’s also the co-founder of Dark Tech Studio, a program where students use prototyping to investigate the more societal impacts of technology.
