Protecting safety is a collective responsibility
Protecting the safety of our university is a collective responsibility for us all. We urge our students and staff to follow the precautionary measures to prevent spread of the coronavirus. This means, for example:
- We encourage everyone to get vaccinated. You can get your first vaccination at separate walk-in hours at the Regional Health Authority (GGD). Students and staff in Leiden can go to GGD Hollands-Midden, students and staff in The Hague can go to GGD Haaglanden.
- Stay at home if you have symptoms of a cold, and get tested.
- Always do the Corona Check before you come to the University
- As a preventive measure, take a self-test (lateral flow) twice a week. Students and staff at our university can order self-tests free of charge via Zelftestonderwijs.nl.
- If you have cold symptoms or any other symptoms of Covid but test negative, be considerate of those around you and stay at home until the worst symptoms are over.
I am concerned about safety/measures at the University. What should I do?
You can discuss your concerns with your manager, study adviser or contact person. If they are unable to allay these concerns, they can contact Jaap van Zaanen or Leo Harskamp from the Security Department.

Do I have to (continue to) work from home?
The advice is to work at the office no more than half of your working hours (if this is possible). For information and help with working from home, see the staff members site. This is where you will also find the policy on working from home. There is also a separate site on remote research and one on remote teaching. The Campus Protocol also contains information on working from home.
I teach classes. Where can I find information?
The remote teaching dossier provides general information about teaching online. For information about available software and how this works, see teachingsupport.universiteitleiden.nl. This also provides roadmaps for converting courses or specific forms of teaching into online versions. In addition, each faculty has a support team for lecturers and ICLON and the Centre for Innovation delivered a series of webinars on various aspects of online teaching, which can still be viewed.
If you have any technical questions, please contact the ISSC helpdesk via the helpdesk portal or at (071 527) 8888. Alongside the website, a support team is available to help you with remote teaching. For any other questions, please use the remote teaching tile in the helpdesk portal.
I'm a student or staff member and I also go to the LUMC buildings. What should I do?
The measures in the LUMC buildings may be different or stricter than those at Leiden University because of patient care. If you have an appointment or classes in one of the LUMC buildings, please follow the LUMC guidelines. You can find these here.
What about ventilation of the University buildings?
It is well known that ventilation is very important in combatting the virus, particularly in closed areas where a lot of people come together. Ensuring that our buildings are well ventilated is one of our continuing priorities. All teaching areas within the University are ventilated in line with RIVM requirements. It is important to open windows in work areas and meeting rooms. You can find a detailed explanation of the ventilation systems in the Campus Protocol or here
Health and hygiene
What should I do if I have coronavirus?
Follows the rules and instructions from the GGD/RIVM on a coronavirus infection.
There is no obligation to report infections. If you have been to the University and you discover shortly afterwards that you have been infected with Covid-19, make sure that you inform the people in your surroundings as soon as possible (including fellow students or colleagues). They can then quickly take the necessary measures themselves.
If everyone follows the Campus Protocol and the general precautions the risk of infection is low. Together, we will make sure the University remains a safe and healthy workplace for our fellow students and colleagues, and at the same time we will play our part in fighting coronavirus.
What's Leiden University's policy on face masks?
You do not have to wear a face mask in University buildings, but are welcome to wear one if your prefer. This advice may regularly change; see the updates page for the latest advice. Please note: additional or other rules may apply in LUMC buildings because of patient care.
Where can I find information on tests and vaccinations?
We encourage everyone to get vaccinated against coronavirus and get tested if you have any symptoms. For more information about vaccination or testing please see the following pages:
- Information on the coronavirus vaccination programme
- Information on testing if you have symptoms
- To make an appointment for a test or vaccination, go to coronatest.nl.
If you are a student or staff member at the University, you can order free self-tests (lateral flow tests) at www.zelftestonderwijs.nl. Please do make use of this option.

General
What measures is Leiden University taking in response to the coronavirus outbreak?
The coronavirus outbreak is a major public health problem. We as a university are taking measures to help contain and solve this problem, and are following the advice of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and central government.
At the start of the 2020-2021 academic year, on 31 August, we were able to teach on campus once again, and more students, lecturers and other members of staff were allowed to come to our buildings. To ensure that this is done safely and according to the guidelines, we have drawn up a Campus Protocol. This contains the rules and regulations that apply at the university to protect our students and staff and prevent the further spread of the virus.
We regularly update the information on this site and urge our students and staff to follow the precautionary measures.
How is the university following the latest developments?
We monitor the information from the Dutch government, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The University and the LUMC also have their own Health, Safety and Environment Office, which closely monitors national and international developments.
Are the guidelines of the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) also available in other languages?
Yes, the RIVM website has an English section about coronavirus: rivm.nl/en/novel-coronavirus. Its guidelines have also been translated by volunteers into several other languages and are available at ludejo.eu/corona. There are already translations in Arabic, French, Polish, Spanish and Turkish.
